History

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, also called the Staffy, is a purebred, originally from the countryside of Staffordshire, England. In the early 1800s, it was the dukes of Hamilton who breed the Bulldog of the time with the Black and Tan Terrier, thus producing the Bull and Terrier. Despite their brawling past, the muscular but agile Staffy still retains traits of courage and tenacity. This former gladiator has turned into a mild, playful companion with notable kindness toward kids. These dogs are widely known as courageous, fearless, highly intelligent, nimble, strong, and tenacious.

Temperament

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a fun-loving character that loves to play with its family and friends. They are typically known to be playful, companionable, fearless, intelligent, and generally responsive to their family. They are super playful and need human companionship, but they typically do well around other strange or assertive dogs. However, Staffies adore children and have noticeable gentleness towards kids. In fact, the English have nicknamed the Staffy breed the “Nanny Dog”. They have a remarkable eagerness and ability to get along with children in the home but also have a guardian temperament. Staffies will turn on guardian mode to protect their family if needed.

How Large are Staffies?

At 14 to 16 inches, Staffies do not stand particularly tall. But, weighing anywhere between 24 to 38 pounds, Staffies pour a gallon of dog into a quart-size container. These are rock-solid, muscular terriers. Their head is short and broad, with pronounced cheek muscles.

Low Upkeep

This athletic breed needs a good walk on a leash every day. They also enjoy a good game in the yard or a run in a safe area, such as a fenced yard. Most Staffordshire Bull Terriers are poor swimmers. With their short hair, coat care is minimal.

Staffies are wonderful companion dogs – loyal, bold, intelligent, active, and cheerful
